kiss by a ros.
Man do I have a treat for you.
I just found the gem of a photo tutorial on facebook of the lovely Ros of Sherwood Lane of her sculpting a miniature baby face.
For those of you who do not know who she is, she doesn’t sculpt as much as she used to, but boy is she talented. Her concentration is on miniature baby sculpts- similar to that of Camille Allen.
Here are a few of her sculpts-
Right? Now pick up your jaw and stop by her facebook here. (you need to login to view).
She doesn’t have a website anymore unfortunately. Also, the photo guide she is using is the Baby Sculpting Guide by artist Katherine Dewey (which is out of print- she wont be publishing any more- trust me I have asked!!). However you can use any “to scale” model to sculpt with, such as the anatomy books I have mentioned in previous posts. Hope that helps!!
Now dear ladies, I need some help from any one out there who can direct me to figure out how to make a teeny realistic diaper. Any help in the form of a comment will be MUCH appreciated!!! 🙂
Happy sculpting friends!!
window to the soul
Ever since starting my journey into sculpting I have been looking into all of the different ways of making eyes. I personally love the look of glass. They look super realistic, and are hard to beat in comparison with other methods- like painting for example (my opinion of course).
At least until I have seen the painted eyes of the lovely porcelain artist Diane Effner
Take a look at these!
They are so pretty. I can’t believe it is painted!! Apparently a lot of sculptors do this- because if you have worked with eyes before they tend to shift while you are sculpting and if you use a blank clay round as an eye and paint it afterwards it will save you some time.
I myself tend to favor series baking-First I make my armature, add a thin layer of clay over armature, Bake, set eyes in clay, Bake.. This way I don’t smoosh parts that I like. I have a small convection oven that I use instead of my household oven. Baking is quick- no preheating and it turns off itself when finished (no burnt sculpts)!! I love it!!
Am I going to try to paint the next one of my babies? No, probably not. I can’t even get myself to finish the poor arms of my clay baby in progress. 🙂 heh! But I could dream can’t I?
While I am on the subject of eyes, if you are a beginner and don’t want the huge financial investment that is glass eyes, why not make your own?
Here is another wonderful eye making tutorial for a domed eye (just like glass)!! I actually think that these are better because glass is known to cloud over time whereas these are made of a polymer clay just like your baby! Great for the teeny mini babies that you can’t find the glass eyes for too!
Free tutorials on the same site include making iridescent fairy wings and wired butterfly wings for some chubby baby fairies!! All tutes here: eye tute
Enjoy!!

Take a look at the finished ear!
Pretty awesome right? Too bad there isn’t any tutorial on how to get your lazy butt to finish some chubby limbs… 😉
His ear tutorial is here: http://madsculptor.blogspot.com/2012/01/sculpting-ears.html

sweet little newborns..
Ladies and gents, I feel as though I hit the jackpot today because I have found the motherload of newborn and infant photos to sculpt from.
Of course I have to share with all of you! Tonight as I was attempting to sculpt a chubby baby leg I realized that I needed more photos to sculpt from- I am aiming for a totally realistic baby here! With the right google searching I came across these babies- (pun intended) 😉
Teeny feet
Belly sleeper
tiny hands!
more tiny hands!
If you haven’t guessed by the huge watermark on those photos, the website is shutterstock.com.
No need for membership to view the newborns- as long as you don’t mind the watermark!! I think there are a million baby photos!!!
Happy sculpting!
Little OOAK girl in progress…
Its been a while since I have shown one of my one of a kinds. There are two sitting next to my bed that are almost all finished, but I am unsure about the limbs. This girl (hopefully) decided to emerge out of the clay last night!
Excuse the grainy camera phone photo- I was excited that I have finally gotten the skull in the right shape!! Now this baby is still unpainted, and unfortunately limbless- I am going to try to make more realistic looking limbs this time. Wish me good luck! 🙂
While I am on the subject, Pat Moulton has new armatures in her shop that are the actual shape of a fetal skull! That should make things so much easier on us sculptors eh?
See the slope down from the back top of the head to the front? You can’t see it here, but the brow bone is also important to study. I will try to draw a diagram soon so you can see what I mean.
